Scanning

We can digitize objects with various sizes. Maximum volume is 2 meters length for a diameter 50 cm (see data sheet). We use the CT Scanner of the Cardio-thoracic Center of Surgery of Hospital Marie-Lannelongue in Plessis-Robinson. The department head Dr. Jean-François Paul joins us in our researchs (see link).

Digitalisation

Nous pouvons numériser des objets de différentes tailles. Le volume maximum est 2 mètres de long pour un diamètre de 50 cm (voir fiche technique). Nous utilisons le Scanner du Centre de Chirurgie Cardio-thoracique de l'Hôpital Marie-Lannelongue au Plessis-Robinson. Micro-Scanning

We have a X8060 micro-scanner from VISCOM. Its digits reach resolutions making it possible to detect details of 1 micron. Maximum volume is of 20x20x20 cm3. Any type of item can be scan: plastic, metal, composite, mineral, biological... (see technical sheet)

Useful Progress dispose d'un micro-scanner X8060 de chez VISCOM. Ses digits atteignent des résolutions permettant de déceler des détails d'1 micron. Le volume maximal est de 20x20x20 cm3. XtremViz Station

Volume Rendering is a very greedy technic in calculation and memory. We build our own machines with our partners of Mac Visions (HK) to reach an optimal computing power. We developed a software of Volume Rendering (C++, VTK) compiled on our computers, named Voxbox (see technical sheet).

Measurment and registration

Tools of analysis and registration enables us to study the digitized parts. Thus by comparison we can detected manufacturing defects, problems of injections for the mouldings, variations of the mechanical and thermal behaviors, like after tire tests (see link).

Highlighting

UsefulProgress innovated in the manufacture of holograms of big size using the technic of Volume Rendering. The resolution obtained is unequalled and the relief of the images remains today most extremely of the market. We expose and we sell our holograms through the whole world (see link).

3D VR Flying through the body

Voxbox software can treat any type of DICOM coming from CT Scanner, MR and radiological tables. Its computing power allows a simple and fast navigation in any volume all giving the possibility of making cuts in all the plans of space (see link). In images and films videos can be computed. A PACS and a Print service are included (see link).

Our tools's applications are usefull for aeronautics, electronics, plastics, foundry, cars industry... (see link). Research department, while passing by the design and the quality control, all the production line is concerned by this new technology. XtremViz Station

3D VR imaging applied to the study of small animals of the human diseases is a revolution. With our noninvasive tools , we do not have any more resort to the systematic dissection of the sample. This technic informs us in a qualitative and quantitative way about the anatomical variations and functional calculuses concerning the fat, the muscle, the bone, the lung... And this throughout the growth of studied pathology. (see link).

L'imagerie 3D VR appliquée à l'étude des maladies humaines chez le petit animal est une vraie révolution. Grâce à nos outils non invasifs, nous n'avons plus recours à la dissection systématique de l'échantillon. The rough stone which must be prepared can profit from a digitalization to optimize the size and to thus avoid the matter loss. That allows also a better adjustment of the ECRIN. The medical reference of multimedia and movies. The Festival integrates all the forms multi-media expression in Medicine, research and medical information. It concerns the doctors and health professionals directly taking part in the Continuous Medical Training course of the Talks with Bichat. Its goal is to make known with the medical public the recent films, CD-ROMs and Internet web sites ' addressing to the health professionals or to their patients. It takes an active part in maintenance and with the improvement of knowledge of the doctors.

To tackle the subject of the body, we evoked five under-topics, without however formalizing too much the things, the work of each one being souvant transverse with several under-topics: body and symbolic systems of the body (Symbols and Myths, origin and role...), body and expressions of the body (transformed Bodies, parcelled out, plays and grimaces...), body and explorations (scientific and anatomical Approach...), crowned body (Sacralization, deification, invention...), idealized body/phantasm/object (Athletics, dance, mode, gun, erotism...)

Eleven creators having the common point to carry out images written with the light, using photographic processes in a step of plastician creation: Artemyz, Avanzato, Bessey, Blanchard, June, Keller, Lebrun, Panavieres, Ordureau, Torrent, Trehard.

Exposition

Did we reach the Science Fiction?

"Fantastic Voyage" is an American movie of science fiction carried out by Richard Fleischer, left in 1966. The idea to fly inside the human body finally became virtually possible. It is not a question to miniaturize a submarine nor to introduce a microscopic camera. The scanners of new generation (provided with 64 detectors) make it possible to acquire images of volumes with a precision of the half-millimetre. Then, with our Volviz calculator we can carry out a voyage in these volumes. We can control the level of transparency and the their magnetic answer or colour gradations of the bodies according to their density in the case of RMI exams.

Le présent a-t-il rattrapé la Fiction?

Le "Voyage fantastique" est un film américain de science-fiction réalisé par Richard Fleischer, sorti en 1966. L'idée de naviguer à l'intérieur du corps humain est enfin devenu virtuellement possible. Il ne s'agit pas de miniaturiser un sous-marin ni de d'introduire une camera microscopique. Les scanners de nouvelle génération (munis de 64 détecteurs) permettent d'acquérir des images de volumes avec une précision du demi-milimètre. Ensuite grâce à notre calculateur Volviz nous pouvons réaliser un voyage dans ces volumes. Nous pouvons controler le niveau de transparence et les dégradés de couleurs des organes en fonction de leur densité ou de leur réponse magnétique dans le cas de l'IRM.

Many ways of visions available...

X-rays which cross volume are faded according to the density of the matter. Detectors X convert the intensities of ray received into range of gray. The human eye can distinguish only one ten ranges from gray scale black to the white. The computer can record million of them. To allow in our eye to perceive these nuances, one replaces the black and the white by various colors which will spread out along the range. A slope of opacity can be added to filter the densities which one wants to study: bone, cartilage, skin, vessels... On this video you can appreciate the multiple visions offered by an examination with the scanner.

Des multitudes de visions possibles...

Les rayons X qui traversent les volume sont altérés en fonction de la densité de la matière traversée. Les détecteurs X convertissent les intensités de rayon reçus en dégradé de gris. L'oeil humain ne peut distinguer qu'une dizaine de dégradés de gris du noir au blanc. L'ordinateur peut en enregistrer des millions. Pour permettre à notre oeil de percevoir ces nuances, on remplace le noir et le blanc par différentes couleurs qui vont s'échelonner le long du dégradé. Une rampe d'opacité peut s'ajouter pour filtrer les densités que l'on veut étudier : os, cartilage, peau, vaisseaux... Sur cette vidéo on peut apprécier les visions multiples offertes par un examen au scanner.

Contribution of the medical imagery 3D with the study of a mummy of IV front century -J.C.

Presentation in French of the work completed jointly by Sylvain Ordureau (UsefulProgress) and Guy Lecuyot (UMR 8546 CNRS-ENS) on explorating 3D from the scanner of the mummy of Saqqara. Tools of registration for images were conceived especially for this examination. Videos were carried out thereafter to fly in the mummy.

Présentation en Français des travaux réalisés conjointement par Sylvain Ordureau (UsefulProgress) et Guy Lecuyot (UMR 8546 CNRS-ENS) sur l'exploration 3D d'un scanner de la momie de Saqqara. Des outils de recalage d'image ont été conçus spécialement pour cet examen. Des vidéos ont été réalisées par la suite pour naviguer à l'intérieur de la momie.

Useful begin...

Sylvain ORDUREAU created the company in 2003 starting from the report that the development of the hardware tools for scanning of digital images (scanner, etc) must be follows by tools for treatment of these images, increasingly more and complex. These tools for treatment consist of mathematical algorithms translated into computer programs which make it possible to treat colossal quantities of data in record time, in order to allow fast animations unequalled degrees of accuracy in the restitution of the images. Useful Progress was created ex-nihilo starting from any existing structure. It employs, since the origin, only highly graduate researchers. Useful Progress is a company which is interested in the models of representation, more particularly with the image processing obtained by various wavelengths: X, MR. and US.

Sylvain ORDUREAU a créé seul la société en 2003 à partir du constat que le développement des outils matériels d'acquisition des images numériques (scanner, etc.) doit s'accompagner d'outils de traitement de ces images, toujours plus nombreuses et complexes. Ces outils de traitement consistent en des algorithmes mathématiques traduits en programmes informatiques qui permettent de traiter des quantités colossales de données en un temps record, afin de permettre des animations rapides à des degrés de précision inégalés dans la restitution des images. De ce fait la société repose sur des travaux informatiques réalisés à partir de données qu'elle produit grâce à son propre matériel ou qui lui sont transmises par des organismes : les laboratoires, qu'ils soient médicaux ou industriels, utilisant des machines (scanners, etc.) de plus en plus puissantes. Useful Progress a été créée ex-nihilo. Elle n'emploie, depuis l'origine, que des chercheurs hautement diplômés. Useful Progress est une société qui s'intéresse aux modèles de représentation, plus particulièrement au traitement d'images obtenues par différentes longueurs d'ondes : X, MR et US.
